How we collect, use, and protect your family's information.

FamFam (“we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the FamFam mobile application (the “App”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your information when you use our App. We are committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Email address — used for email/password sign-in and email verification
- Display name — your name as shown to other family members
- Authentication identifiers — if you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive a unique identifier and, where provided, your name and email address
1.2 Family & Household Data
When you create or join a family, we collect and store:
- Family name and family member profiles (name, initials, colour-coded identifier)
- Region code (e.g. GB, AU) — used to tailor AI-generated content to regional terminology
- Home settings — your preferences for the home screen display
1.3 App Content Data
As your family uses the App, we collect and store the content you create, including:
- Shopping lists and list items (including AI-categorised items)
- Meal plans and dinner check-in responses
- Calendar events (including AI-parsed events)
- Recipes (manually added, AI-suggested, and scanned from photos)
1.4 Photos and Images
If you use the recipe scanning feature, photos you capture or select are compressed on-device and sent to our server for AI-powered text extraction. We do not store the original photos after processing is complete.
1.5 Push Notification Tokens
If you grant notification permission, we store your device's push notification token to send you reminders.
1.6 Subscription and Purchase Data
Subscription status and purchase events are processed via RevenueCat. We do not receive or store your payment card details — these are handled entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play.
1.7 Usage Analytics & Crash Reports
We use Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to collect anonymised usage data and crash reports. This data helps us understand how the App is used and fix technical issues.
1.8 Weather Data
If your family enables the weather display, we use a location (based on your family's configured area, not GPS tracking) to fetch weather data from Open-Meteo via our server. We do not track your real-time location.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use collected information to:
- Provide, personalise, and improve the App and its features
- Enable family coordination — sharing lists, meals, events, and recipes among family members
- Power AI features, including grocery categorisation, recipe suggestions, event parsing, and recipe scanning via Google Gemini
- Send push notifications you have opted into
- Diagnose crashes and fix technical issues
- Analyse anonymised usage patterns to improve the App
- Determine your family's subscription status
- Send transactional emails (e.g. email verification)
- Comply with our legal obligations
3. AI Features and Data Processing
FamFam uses AI to enhance several features, including grocery categorisation, recipe suggestions, calendar event parsing, and recipe scanning. All AI processing is performed server-side via Google Cloud Functions.
Content you provide to AI features is sent to Google Gemini for processing. We do not use your data to train AI models. Google's use of data sent via the Gemini API is governed by Google's API Terms of Service.
4. Third-Party Services
We share your data with the following third-party service providers only to the extent necessary to operate the App:

We do not sell your personal information to any third party.
5. Family Data Sharing
When you join a family group, other members can see content shared within the family, including shopping lists, meal plans, calendar events, and recipes. If you leave a family or your membership is removed, you will no longer have access to that family's shared data.
6. Push Notifications
If you grant notification permission, we may send you:
- Shopping list reminders (batched at 60-second intervals)
- Dinner check-in reminders
- Shopping list completion alerts
You can withdraw permission at any time in your device settings or the App's notification preferences.
7. Data Retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account and family are active. If you delete your account, your personal data is removed. Shared family data contributed to a group may be retained for remaining members but will no longer be associated with your identity.
8. Your Rights
Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate personal information
- Delete your account and associated data — via Profile → Settings → Delete Account
- Complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC)

9. Children's Privacy
Family member profiles for children are created and managed by a parent or guardian. Children do not create their own accounts. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13.
10. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted data transmission (TLS), Firestore security rules with per-family access controls, Firebase Authentication, and secure server-side processing of all AI features.
11. International Data Transfers
Our third-party service providers may process data in countries outside Australia, including the United States. By using the App, you consent to the transfer of your information to these countries.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
